Tigray Cultural Leaders Praised for Reviving Ashenda Festival and Tourism Efforts
The Head of the Tigray Bureau of Culture and Tourism, Dr. Atsbha Gebreegziabher, and Deputy Head, Ms. Zenebu Halefom, are receiving widespread recognition for their dedicated role in preserving Tigray’s cultural heritage and reviving tourism in the war-torn region.
Despite political challenges and the impact of conflict, the two leaders stood firm against corruption and ensured that Ashenda, the annual festival of Tigrayan girls, was celebrated in a grand manner this year. Their leadership has been hailed as a symbol of resilience and cultural pride for Tigrayans both at home and abroad.

The Ashenda festival, marked by traditional dress, music, and dance, is one of Tigray’s most vibrant cultural expressions. This year’s celebration drew renewed attention to the importance of safeguarding and promoting indigenous heritage as part of Tigray’s broader reconstruction and healing process.
Dr. Atsbha and Ms. Zenebu have also been instrumental in pushing forward efforts to have Ashenda registered with UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Such recognition would not only preserve the festival for future generations but also place Tigray on the global cultural tourism map.
“Culture and tourism can play a vital role in rebuilding Tigray’s economy and spirit,” said Dr. Atsbha. “Ashenda is not just a festival; it is a message of unity, resilience, and the enduring identity of our people.”
Community leaders and diaspora groups are now being called upon to support the UNESCO bid and contribute to the wider revival of Tigray’s cultural and tourism sectors.
Observers note that these efforts come at a critical time when the region is seeking to recover from years of devastation. By promoting festivals like Ashenda, Tigray aims to strengthen cultural pride while creating opportunities for economic growth through tourism.
