Tigray Advances Agricultural Modernization as Post War Recovery Continues

Written by Chekole Alemu

The Tigray branch of the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Transformation has announced the handover of agricultural technology equipment valued at more than 100 million birr, marking a significant step in efforts to revive and modernize the region’s farming sector after nearly two years of war.

According to the institute, the equipment was procured through a partnership between the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Transformation’s Tigray branch and Irish Aid. The inputs are being distributed to farmer cooperatives and agricultural business enterprises with the aim of improving productivity and supporting a shift toward more modern and organized agricultural systems.

The handover ceremony was attended by the President of the Tigray Interim Administration, Lt. Gen. Tadesse Worede, along with senior officials from the federal and regional branches of the Institute of Agricultural Transformation, representatives of the Tigray Bureau of Agriculture and Natural Resources, delegates from various government offices, development partners, and invited guests.

Regional officials say the initiative aligns with the interim administration’s broader focus on modernizing agriculture as a foundation for recovery. Much of Tigray’s agricultural infrastructure and production capacity was severely disrupted during the conflict, leaving many farmers displaced and livelihoods damaged.

Agriculture remains the backbone of the region’s economy, and authorities view its rehabilitation as central to food security, income generation, and long term stability. Development partners and sector experts note that sustained support, access to technology, and institutional coordination will be critical to ensuring that post war agricultural transformation delivers tangible results for farming communities.

The distribution of modern agricultural equipment is being seen as an early but important signal of Tigray’s efforts to rebuild its rural economy and move beyond emergency response toward structured recovery.
