Raya University Successfully Hosted its Second National Research Conference

Raya University’s Office of the Scientific Directorate for Research, Community Engagement, University-Industry Linkage, and Technology Transfer concluded its Second National Research Conference. Held from February 14–15, 2026, under the theme “Advancing Knowledge and Technological Solutions for Community Development,” the event brought together researchers, academic reviewers, and policymakers from various institutions interested in researches that transform community life and fulfill the university’s strategic vision.

In his opening address, Professor Tadesse Dejenie, President of Raya University, elaborated on the necessity for research to transcend the simple expansion of knowledge or the production of publications; he stressed that academic inquiry must prioritize solving the critical challenges facing the community. Professor Tadesse further explained that national conferences provide essential platforms for professional growth, allowing researchers to stay informed on current developments, while building meaningful connections within the academic and wider community.

Keynote speaker Girmay Gebresamuel (PhD.), Dean of the College of Dry-Land Agriculture and Natural Resources at Mekelle University, argued that the ultimate goal of research should be sustainable societal impact, and scientific findings must be integrated with indigenous knowledge to create practical technologies. Furthermore, he stated that the community should be viewed as an active participant throughout the research process rather than merely an end user.
The conference offered opportunities for scholars to present their research works through both in-person and online sessions. Meanwhile, researchers from various disciplines utilized poster presentations to refine their findings through peer feedback.
At the concluding end of the conference, the office for Research, Community Engagement, University-Industry Linkage, and Technology Transfer organized an immersive field trip to Saint George Bolenta Church, a historical monetary perched at the mountain top of Dogua Bolenta, Embahsity kebele of Enda Mekhoni wereda, south Tigray. As the participants traveled through the dense forest extending from Gira Tserih past Mahbere Bokuru, they experienced the dramatic escarpments and eternal green highlands of Southern Tigray, and this this has left them, as they have reflected, with a deep personal connection to the historical heritage and beautiful landscapes.

Reflecting on the field visit and the conference as a whole, Mr. Tesfay Haregeweyne, Director of the Academic Programs Office at RU, noted the vital role of research conferences in strengthening academic collaboration and driving innovative advancements across diverse disciplines. He also added that the field visit, in particular, showcased the importance of exploring, protecting, and preserving the rich natural environment of the local area, recognizing it as both a valuable research asset and a shared community responsibility.

In his concluding remark during the field trip, Scientific Director for Research, Community Engagement, University-Industry Linkage, and Technology Transfer, Mehari Haile (Ph.D.), reiterated that Raya University will remain committed to enhancing knowledge bases and advancing technological solutions that help drive innovation and support sustainable developments. He also presented certificates of recognition to the presenters and organizers who pledged to continue supporting RU’s efforts to bring about societal changes and national development.
