Addis Ababa,March 3, 2026 (HNH)-

Women have been encouraged to assert greater political ownership and participation in Ethiopia’s upcoming seventh general election, scheduled for June 1, 2026.

The call was made by Adem Farah, Vice President of the ruling Prosperity Party, during a national concluding forum organized by the Ministry of Peace in collaboration with women’s organizations. The forum was held under the theme Women’s Role for Peaceful National Elections and focused on strengthening women’s engagement in the electoral process.

Speaking at the event, Adem said women must play a leading role in ensuring that the election is credible and peaceful. He emphasized that participation should go beyond voting, urging women to contest for office and contribute to maintaining stability throughout the electoral cycle.

According to him, the administration that assumed office in 2018 has expanded opportunities for women in leadership and decision making. He noted that women’s representation in key positions has surpassed 50 percent, describing it as a significant milestone in the country’s political reform process.

Adem also highlighted national programs such as corridor development projects, the Green Legacy Initiative, and the YeLemat Trufat program, commonly known as Bounty of the Basket. He said these initiatives have created economic opportunities and improved livelihoods for women across different regions.

The Prosperity Party has repeatedly stated that increasing women’s participation in politics, the economy, and public decision making remains central to its reform agenda. Party officials argue that inclusive governance and gender equality are necessary to sustain democratic progress and social stability.

During the forum, participants discussed ways to enhance civic education, encourage female candidates, and promote peaceful engagement among youth. Adem called on women to guide younger generations to take part in the electoral process responsibly and constructively.

The national election will be overseen by the National Election Board of Ethiopia. It is expected to be a key political event as Ethiopia continues its broader reform efforts and seeks to strengthen democratic institutions.
