Over 200 Young Women Attend Digital Skills Initiative Launch in Addis Ababa
More than 200 young women gathered in Addis Ababa on March 28 for the launch of AGCCI Phase II, a program aimed at expanding digital skills and strengthening women’s participation in Ethiopia’s growing technology sector.

The event was jointly organized by UN Women Ethiopia and ALX Ethiopia, in partnership with the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute and the Ministry of Innovation and Technology Ethiopia. The initiative also received support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The program is designed to promote digital inclusion and encourage young women to pursue careers in artificial intelligence, software development, and emerging technologies. Organizers said the initiative aims to address gender gaps in Ethiopia’s digital economy while preparing participants for global technology opportunities.
Opening the event, Jennet Kem emphasized the importance of women’s participation in shaping technological advancement.

“As we move deeper into this era of digital transformation, and as artificial intelligence continues to shape economies and societies, women must not only benefit from innovation but also play a leading role in designing and developing AI-driven solutions,” she said.
Meklit Baye highlighted technology’s potential to expand opportunities and reduce barriers for young women entering the workforce.
A keynote address was delivered by Miraj Zekyi, who underscored the government’s commitment to building an inclusive digital economy.
“The future of Ethiopia’s digital economy is being built today,” she said. “It will be stronger and more innovative if women and girls are at the center. The Ministry of Innovation and Technology is committed to supporting this journey.”

The event also featured a panel discussion titled “My Professional Journey: Being a Voice in My Sector,” where speakers shared personal experiences working in male dominated industries and building international careers from Ethiopia. Participants discussed challenges, opportunities, and strategies for advancing women’s leadership in technology.
The launch concluded with closing remarks from Doris Mpoumou, followed by the official launch of AGCCI Phase II and a ceremonial celebration marking the start of the program.
Organizers described the initiative as part of broader efforts to strengthen youth empowerment, digital inclusion, and gender equality in Ethiopia’s evolving technology landscape.
