National Rehabilitation Commission Consults Donor Countries on DDR Program
The National Rehabilitation Commission says it has held discussions with representatives of donor countries and international organizations on the implementation of the country’s Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) program.

According to a statement posted on the commission’s official Facebook page, the meeting focused on the progress of the DDR process and the challenges faced in implementing the program.
Commissioner Temesgen Tlahun briefed participants on the activities currently being carried out under the program. He said more than 85,400 former combatants in the regions of Tigray Region, Afar Region, Amhara Region and Oromia Region have passed through key stages of the program and have been reintegrated into civilian life.

The commissioner said the commission is working with various stakeholders, particularly regional governments, to support the sustainable reintegration of former fighters and ensure the success of the program. According to the statement, many of those who have already returned to their communities are now engaged in different economic activities and are creating employment opportunities for others.
The commission also presented details on achievements and challenges encountered during the implementation of the DDR program and responded to questions raised by participants during the discussion.

The statement noted that the commission has faced difficulties in fully implementing its activities in all regions. It cited political and security conditions in Tigray Region that contradict the peace agreement, as well as the large financial and resource requirements of the program and the complexity of coordination.
Commissioner Temesgen also called on Ethiopia’s partner countries and donor organizations to strengthen and continue their support for the program.
Representatives of donor countries and international organizations said the DDR program, implemented in line with international standards, contributes to peace and security in Ethiopia. They also reaffirmed their commitment to continue supporting the initiative.

The DDR process in Tigray has faced delays, with officials indicating that obstacles from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front have complicated efforts to advance the program in the region. However, some progress has recently been reported. Last week, several members of Division 70 of the former Tigray forces proceeded with the DDR process, marking a limited but notable step toward reintegration in the region.
