Indiscriminate Killings in Mekoni

On 18 August 2025, in the town of Mekoni (መኾኒ), the outlawed TPLF “Above-the-Core” armed faction carried out a massacre of unarmed civilians. In a coordinated attack, these militias opened fire indiscriminately, killing men, women, and children.

This atrocity, executed in collusion with the Eritrean regime and other external actors, is part of a deliberate campaign of terror designed to subjugate the people of Southern Tigray.

Our Position

The Tigrayan Advocacy for Human Rights and Justice Groups:

Strongly condemn this massacre and all atrocities committed by the outlawed TPLF “Above-the-Core.”

Call for international sanctions against TPLF leaders, their families, and financial networks.

Urge the UN, AU, EU, and international community to designate the TPLF “Above-the-Core” as a terrorist organization.

Appeal to Tigrayans worldwide to stand in solidarity with the victims of Mekoni.
