By Chekole Alemu

Mekelle City Administration Mayor Dr Redae Berhe has called on residents of Mekelle and the wider public to mark the 2026 Ethiopian Epiphany celebration as a moment of unity, renewal, and shared responsibility.

In a message released through the Mekelle City Administration Communication Office on the occasion of Timket, observed annually on January 19, the mayor emphasized the need to strengthen social cohesion and protect the spirit of togetherness that enables communities to live and work side by side. He urged citizens to reject divisive actions and to focus on common goals that contribute to peace, stability, and long term development.

Dr Redae also paid tribute to those who have made sacrifices for peace and security, noting that progress is achieved through collective effort and commitment. He stressed that honoring these sacrifices is essential as the city and the region continue efforts toward recovery and renewal.

Highlighting the significance of the celebration, the mayor underscored Timket’s role not only as a major religious observance but also as a cultural event that reflects shared values and identity. He called on residents, religious institutions, and visitors to work closely with city administration staff and security forces to ensure the celebration remains peaceful, orderly, and respectful of its spiritual meaning.

Timket commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan and is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In Mekelle, the celebration traditionally brings together large numbers of worshippers for religious processions and the blessing of holy water, serving as a powerful expression of faith and community solidarity.

Dr Redae concluded his message by expressing hope that the 2026 Timket celebration would strengthen peace, mutual respect, and a sense of shared responsibility among the people of Mekelle and beyond.
