Asphalt Road Works Continue in Mekelle as Officials Cite Transport Benefits
Asphalt road construction works are continuing in several areas of Mekelle through cooperation between Sur Construction and the Mekelle City Administration, with project implementers saying the upgrades are aimed at improving transport services for residents.

According to Sur Construction’s public relations department, the asphalt covering works are intended to ensure smoother and more reliable transportation for the community. The company said the improved roads are expected to ease mobility, reduce travel time, and support daily economic and social activities in the city.

Despite challenges related to fuel shortages and delays in payment for completed works, Sur Construction has continued implementation using limited available resources. In the Tabia Aynalem area, about half a kilometer of black asphalt road has so far been completed, while work is ongoing on remaining sections.
Residents of the area said that while delays have been observed, they are encouraged by the progress made so far and have called for the works to be strengthened and completed as planned.

According to Engineer Dawit Hailu, project manager for Mekelle City road works, the total asphalt road coverage underway in Tabia Aynalem, including previously completed sections, extends to about 3.1 kilometers. He noted that around 1.5 kilometers remain pending due to unresolved right of way clearance and compensation issues, calling on all relevant bodies to give the matter due attention.
Engineer Dawit Hailu added that if challenges related to fuel supply, budget constraints, and right of way issues are addressed, Sur Construction currently has sufficient machinery, manpower, and materials to complete the project within the agreed timeline.
