By Chekole Alemu

The Mekelle City Administration Cabinet has approved the allocation of 10 million birr to support internally displaced residents, particularly children, who are facing acute food shortages, according to information released by the city’s Communication and Public Relations Office.

The decision was taken during an emergency cabinet meeting held on 13 Tahsas 2018 E.C., where officials reviewed the humanitarian situation of displaced people currently living in shelters across the city. The meeting focused on the risks posed by hunger and deteriorating living conditions among vulnerable groups.

The city administration stated that an emergency life saving committee has been activated following a joint meeting between the city cabinet and zonal executive bodies. The committee includes representatives from local administration structures, religious institutions, community elders, business leaders, and other stakeholders.

As part of the response, cabinet members and senior city officials have pledged personal financial contributions of 250,000 birr each to support displaced residents in severe hardship. According to Mekelle FM, these individual pledges amount to a combined contribution of 1.25 million birr.

The administration indicated that the resource mobilization and assistance effort is scheduled to begin on 14 Tahsas 2018 E.C., with the aim of delivering timely support to affected families.

The information was obtained from official communications of the Mekelle City Administration.
