Mekelle Administration Presses Ahead With Investigations, Urges Public Cooperation

By Chekole Alemu

The Mekelle City Administration has confirmed that its investigation process into corruption, rent seeking, and governance related violations is continuing, with authorities calling on residents to actively support the effort. According to FM Mekelle 104.4, city officials stressed that public cooperation remains essential to the success of the ongoing investigations.

Mayor of Mekelle Dr. Redae Berhe said the challenges facing the city extend beyond administrative structures and require broad societal engagement. He noted that corruption and poor governance cannot be effectively addressed without the full participation of the public, warning that failure to act collectively would allow corrupt practices to take deeper root.

The mayor stated that officials previously suspended over alleged rent seeking and related offenses are already under investigation, while additional individuals are undergoing screening. He said the administration has opened channels for the public to report information relevant to the investigation process.

Dr. Redae further explained that land administration and land management remain key areas of concern. Task forces have been established at the city level and across all seven sub cities to oversee land related governance, while a chief auditor has been deployed to conduct audits in each sub city. In parallel, the Anti Corruption Commission has launched investigations in selected areas.

According to the mayor, findings from the ongoing investigations and screening processes will be disclosed to the public in due course. He also urged residents to support efforts to recover illegally occupied land and to cooperate with authorities as part of a broader push to strengthen accountability and restore public trust in Mekelle’s administration.

The mayor’s role has been central to advancing the investigation process, with his leadership giving the effort both direction and urgency. City officials note that the sustained push by Mayor Dr. Redae Berhe to confront corruption and poor governance has helped keep the issue in the public spotlight and reinforced the administration’s commitment to accountability. His repeated calls for transparency and public participation have been presented as a key factor in maintaining momentum and ensuring the investigations continue without interruption.
