Adanech Urges Unified Public and Institutional Commitment to Combat Corruption
By Staff Writer
The Addis Ababa City Administration marked the 22nd International Anti-Corruption Day with a citywide discussion that brought together government representatives, community institutions, and youth groups to assess ongoing efforts to curb corruption and strengthen accountability systems.
The event, held under the global theme “Nurturing Integrity for a Better Generation and Strengthening Institutions through Ethical Conduct” was led by Mayor Adanech Abebe, who emphasized that defeating corruption requires the shared commitment of all segments of society and every institution.

According to Haftay Gebre-Egzabhier, head of the Addis Ababa Communication Office, who shared details in Amharic on his verified Facebook account, the discussion provided community leaders, religious figures, and students with comprehensive briefings on the far-reaching impacts of corruption. Participants were informed about how corruption undermines national prosperity, erodes public trust, and threatens the future of young people. Speakers underscored that integrity, transparency, and ethical conduct must be strengthened across all sectors to reduce vulnerabilities and close loopholes that enable misconduct.

City officials highlighted the reform measures introduced in recent years to modernize public services, reinforce oversight mechanisms, and limit systemic corruption. They noted, however, that individual-level corruption within government structures remains a significant challenge that demands continuous vigilance and stronger institutional discipline.
Participants also stressed the crucial roles of families, schools, religious institutions, civic groups, and public bodies in fostering a society that rejects corruption in both principle and practice. Building a shared culture of ethical behavior, they noted, is essential for sustaining the momentum of ongoing reforms.

The commemoration concluded with calls for deeper collaboration among institutions and citizens to ensure Ethiopia’s anti-corruption efforts remain effective, inclusive, and transformative for future generations.
