Land Ownership Certificates Issued to Residents in Quiha Sub-City, Mekelle

More than 1,890 residents of Maytse’do and Shibeta tabias in Quiha Sub City have begun receiving land ownership certificates for plots incorporated into Mekelle city administration since 2011, according to city officials.

The land ownership certification process was officially launched during a public event organized by the Mekelle City Administration, marking the resolution of a long delayed issue that had left many residents without formal recognition of their land rights.

Mekelle Mayor Dr Reda’i Berhe, who presided over the ceremony, said the certification process had stalled for years due to administrative and planning challenges. He stated that sustained follow up, institutional discipline, and clear political direction under his leadership were key to unlocking the process and bringing it to implementation. City officials described the development as the result of the mayor’s consistent and unwavering leadership in prioritizing land governance and residents’ rights.Land Ownership Certificates Issued to Residents in Quiha Sub-City, Mekelle

The mayor commended municipal offices and technical professionals who contributed to the effort, noting that coordinated work across city institutions was essential to reaching the current stage. He also urged beneficiaries to use the land certificates responsibly and in accordance with legal and planning frameworks, cautioning against informal transfers to third parties.

Residents attending the event said the activation of the urban development plan had corrected a long standing governance gap. They noted that the issuance of land ownership certificates had brought legal certainty and renewed confidence in the city administration.

According to the Mekelle City Communication Affairs Office, certificates of appreciation were awarded to zonal and sub city institutions that demonstrated strong performance in advancing the implementation of the urban development plan.
