Addis Ababa — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed a joint session of Ethiopia’s federal parliament during his official working visit to Addis Ababa, marking a rare and symbolic moment in Ethiopia–India diplomatic relations.
Speaking before members of the House of Peoples’ Representatives and the House of Federation, Prime Minister Modi reflected on Ethiopia’s historical legacy, contemporary ambitions, and future outlook. “To stand in Ethiopia is to stand where the past is honored, the present is full of purpose, and the future is welcomed with an open heart,” he said in his opening remarks.
The joint session coincides with the sixth term of the House of Peoples’ Representatives and the fifth year of the House of Federation’s current working term, giving the address added institutional significance.
Prime Minister Modi’s appearance before Ethiopia’s highest legislative bodies highlights the growing political and strategic engagement between Addis Ababa and New Delhi. Ethiopia and India have long-standing ties spanning trade, education, development cooperation, and people-to-people relations, with India remaining one of Ethiopia’s key partners in investment and capacity building.
Officials from both countries view the visit as an opportunity to deepen bilateral cooperation across diplomatic, economic, and multilateral platforms. The address is expected to reinforce political goodwill and lay the groundwork for expanded collaboration between the two nations in the years ahead.
