IGAD Representative Highlights Partnerships and Political Solutions at UN Security Council
New York – At the United Nations Security Council’s 9,991st meeting, Mr. Cherinet Alem Hariffo, Permanent Representative of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to the UN, delivered a statement on the future of peace operations.
In his remarks, Mr. Hariffo underscored the need for stronger collaboration between the UN, the African Union, and IGAD in addressing conflicts across the continent. He stressed that peace operations must be guided by mandates rooted in political solutions, inclusivity, and sustained dialogue.
He also highlighted the importance of securing predictable financing for African-led peace operations, noting that reliance on military deployments alone is insufficient to guarantee lasting peace. According to Mr. Hariffo, durable stability requires political dialogue, reconciliation, and long-term solutions to address the root causes of conflict.
The statement, shared by the IGAD Secretariat through its official channels, reflects the organization’s role in advancing regional peace and security efforts in partnership with international bodies.
