By Chekole Alemu
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has inaugurated its first Permanent Observer Mission Office to the United Nations, marking a significant step in strengthening the regional bloc’s engagement with the international community.
The new mission, located in New York, was officially opened by IGAD Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu. Speaking at the event, Dr. Workneh described the office as a “new era of engagement” that will enhance IGAD’s presence within the UN system and elevate the region’s voice on key global issues, including peace and security, climate resilience, humanitarian response, health, and sustainable development.

IGAD’s Permanent Observer to the UN, Mr. Cherinet Hariffo, who has held the role for the past year, will continue to represent the organization at UN headquarters. His mandate includes articulating and advancing the priorities of the eight-member bloc, which comprises Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.

Dr. Workneh emphasized that the mission reflects IGAD’s broader commitment to multilateralism and cooperation. “This office is a testament to our dedication to working with global partners for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Horn of Africa,” he said.
The establishment of the mission underscores IGAD’s growing role in regional diplomacy and its efforts to address complex challenges affecting the Horn of Africa, from conflict resolution to climate change.
