Horn News Hub Statement on the 130th Anniversary of the Victory of Adwa
As Ethiopia marks the 130th anniversary of the historic Victory of Adwa, Horn News Hub honors the courage, unity and sacrifice of the generation that defended the nation’s sovereignty on March 2, 1896.
The Battle of Adwa was more than a military triumph. It was a defining moment in African history. Under the leadership of Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul, and through the commitment of regional leaders such as Ras Alula Aba Nega, as well as the formidable Oromo horsemen who played a decisive role on the battlefield, Ethiopians from diverse regions stood together and changed the course of history.
One hundred thirty years later, Adwa remains a symbol of what unity can achieve in moments of national challenge. It teaches us that courage is not only found on the battlefield, but also in the decisions we make for the future of our country.
For the younger generation, Adwa should not be remembered only as a story of the past. It should be a lesson in responsibility. The patriots of 1896 faced foreign aggression with determination and discipline. Today’s generation faces different challenges: economic transformation, technological competition, social division and the rapid spread of misinformation.
The spirit of Adwa calls on young Ethiopians to invest their energy in peace rather than conflict, in innovation rather than destruction, in entrepreneurship rather than dependency. The future battlefield is education, technology, research and business. National strength in the 21st century is built through knowledge, digital advancement and productive enterprise.
Horn News Hub urges all citizens, especially the youth, to reject hate speech and divisive narratives. The unity demonstrated at Adwa was not built on hostility among Ethiopians, but on a shared purpose to defend sovereignty. Preserving that spirit today requires dialogue, mutual respect and a commitment to peaceful coexistence.
As we commemorate 130 years since Adwa, let us honor our ancestors not only with ceremonies, but with action. Let us build a country where unity is stronger than division, where technology drives progress, where business creates opportunity and where peace becomes the foundation of national growth.
Adwa was a victory of courage. The next victory must be a victory of wisdom.
