By Chekole Alemu

Ethiopian digital influencer Adonay, who has built a following of more than 5 million users on TikTok, has unveiled a new locally developed social media application named SYDRO, positioning it as a potential alternative to global short-video platforms.

According to information released about the platform, SYDRO is designed not only as a content-sharing space but also as a monetization tool tailored to Ethiopian creators. The application is expected to allow users to earn income directly in Ethiopian birr, addressing long-standing concerns among local content creators over payment limitations on international platforms.

Although many Ethiopian creators generate significant engagement on TikTok, the platform’s monetization system does not fully support direct withdrawals within Ethiopia. As a result, some creators have relied on relatives or friends living in eligible countries to access their earnings. Supporters of Sydro say the new platform aims to eliminate this dependency by offering a localized payment structure.

The application has officially launched today, but will start working at the very soon, with further details anticipated regarding its features, payment system, and rollout strategy.

Beyond financial access, the launch is also seen as a broader signal of growing domestic innovation in the technology sector. Observers note that the move could encourage young Ethiopian developers and technology students to pursue locally driven digital solutions, particularly in areas where global platforms have left regulatory or financial gaps.
