Ethiopia’s Refugees and Returnees Service has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Environmental Protection Authority to strengthen collaboration on integrating environmental protection into refugee programs.

According to the Director General of the Refugees and Returnees Service, Tayiba Hassen Kayo, writing on her verified Facebook account, the agreement aims to promote environmentally sound, climate resilient and sustainable interventions in refugee hosting areas, benefiting both refugees and host communities.

She stated that the partnership will focus on mitigating environmental impacts associated with refugee settlements, restoring degraded ecosystems and ensuring the responsible management of natural resources. The cooperation is also intended to strengthen resilience and protect livelihoods in areas hosting displaced populations.

The Director General noted that aligning environmental protection with refugee response efforts is critical to addressing climate related risks and long term environmental pressures. She added that the initiative seeks to foster sustainable solutions that support coexistence between refugees and host communities, while ensuring that no one is left behind.

Ethiopia hosts millions of refugees from neighboring countries, and several reports indicate that the scale of displacement has placed significant pressure on land, water and forest resources, contributing to environmental degradation in many refugee hosting areas.
