An Ethiopian delegation led by Ambassador Hirut Zemene, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, participated in the opening ceremony of the Fifty First Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee of the African Union.

The session opened on January 13, 2026, at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa and comes ahead of two major continental meetings the Forty Eighth Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the Thirty Ninth Summit of the African Union, both scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa in February 2026.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, members of the AU Commission, representatives of various AU organs, and senior officials of the Union.

According to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the session will see ambassadors deliberate on a wide range of institutional and policy issues. These include the work of the PRC sub committees, reports submitted by AU organs, institutions, and specialized technical agencies.

The Permanent Representatives Committee is expected to conclude its session by adopting its final report, along with draft decisions to be forwarded to the Executive Council and the Assembly of Heads of State and Government for consideration at their upcoming ordinary sessions.

The meetings form part of the African Union’s regular decision making process, providing a preparatory platform for key policy discussions and resolutions at the highest political level of the Union.
