Ethiopia’s Special Operations Command celebrated its 65th anniversary with demonstrations highlighting the unit’s capabilities and operational readiness.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the event on his X account, praising the command for its role in various missions and its resilience over decades. Recent defense reform efforts have modernized the command in terms of structure, manpower, and equipment, incorporating airborne, commando, and specialized counter-terrorism forces.

The anniversary exercises included integrated water-borne drills and coordinated demonstrations by airborne and commando units, showcasing tactical proficiency and the readiness of personnel. Observers described the events as a reflection of the command’s capacity to carry out operations under diverse conditions.

The Special Operations Command has been a central element of Ethiopia’s military, tasked with responding to high-risk operations and supporting broader defense objectives. Analysts noted that the anniversary display emphasized the ongoing modernization and professionalization of the country’s armed forces.
