Ethiopia Gears Up for 39th African Union Summit and Italy–Africa Forum
Ethiopia has completed comprehensive preparations for the upcoming 39th African Union (AU) Summit of Heads of State and Government and the Italy–Africa Forum, scheduled for next week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed.
Ambassador Nebiat stated that the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council will be held on 11–12 February, the 39th Summit on 14–15 February, and the Italy-Africa Summit on 13 February.
Ambassador Nebiyat said Ethiopia has ensured both logistical and substantive readiness to guarantee the success of the meetings. The events, he noted, carry strategic importance for Ethiopia politically, economically, and in terms of its international profile.
On the political-diplomatic front, Ethiopia will engage actively on issues that safeguard its national interests. Economically, participants will be hosted in a way that reflects Ethiopian culture and values, with efforts made to promote conference tourism.
In a continuation of past practices, 179 youth volunteers have been mobilized to support the diplomatic events, demonstrating citizen engagement in advancing Ethiopia’s international initiatives. The volunteer program aligns with the framework established by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed for organized youth participation in national diplomacy.
The AU Summit will focus on “Assuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063.” Ambassador Nebiyat highlighted Ethiopia’s ongoing initiatives in water cooperation, including efforts to strengthen Nile River cooperation under the AU Commission. The country has also invested in water resource management, rehabilitation of water sources, and green development projects.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged all Ethiopians, particularly residents of Addis Ababa, to actively support the Summit and contribute to the successful hosting of these high-profile international gatherings.
