Ethiopia at the Crossroads: Dismissing the Adwa Bandit Askaris to Defend National Sovereignty

The Nile Basin today is a stage of geopolitical rivalry, history, and environmental urgency. Egypt, whose survival has always been tethered to the Nile, continues to manipulate regional politics to secure its interests. Yet, Ethiopia custodian of the Nile’s source stands trapped not only by external pressure but also by the betrayal of internal actors who serve as mercenaries for foreign agendas.

The so-called TPLF of Adwa, once glorified by colonial powers, has long acted as the Bandit Askaris of the Horn of Africa. Their legacy is not one of liberation, but of treason pawns for Egypt, guardians of Italy’s colonial headquarter in Adwa, and now, destabilizers of Ethiopia’s national sovereignty. They signed illegal agreements that shackled Ethiopia, rendering it landlocked, geo-strategically encircled, and economically subjugated.

This betrayal is no accident of history. From their service under Italian command to their modern role in advancing Egypt’s strategic interests, the TPLF’s identity has been rooted in mercenary politics. The Italian Palace in Adwa the very headquarters of colonial operations in Somalia, Eritrea, and Ethiopia still stands as a monument of that shame. Today, Egypt skillfully exploits these historical servants, along with the PFDJ regime in Eritrea, to weaken Ethiopia’s grip over its natural and legal property, especially the waters of the Nile.

This conspiracy comes at a decisive moment. Ethiopia is preparing to inaugurate the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in the coming new year an achievement of historic proportions that will guarantee energy sovereignty, regional development, and a new future for Africa. But Egypt, fearing the loss of its absolute control over the Nile, conspires with TPLF, PFDJ, and now the so-called Amhara extremist militia Fano to destabilize Ethiopia and obstruct the GERD’s completion.

The Troy Horses,the mercenaries.

These forces, though cloaked in different identities, are united by one agenda: to bleed Ethiopia from within so that Cairo can continue dictating the Nile’s destiny. Fano, once presented as a local militia, has degenerated into another mercenary tool of Egypt waging war not for the people, but for foreign interests. By sowing chaos and division, they serve the very same colonial strategy of weakening Ethiopia from the inside.

But their conspiracy will fail. Ethiopia has weathered far greater storms throughout its history. From Adwa to the present, our people have always risen to defend sovereignty against colonial ghosts and their servants. The GERD’s inauguration will not be stopped. Instead, it will stand as a monument to Ethiopian resilience, a symbol of Africa’s renaissance, and a guarantee of prosperity for generations to come.

Ethiopians must awaken. Our sovereignty, security, and national interest are not abstract ideals they are under attack from within and without. No nation can rise while harboring mercenaries who drain its lifeblood. TPLF, PFDJ, and the extremist Fano are the three toxic instruments of Egypt’s policy in the Horn of Africa. To allow them space is to invite perpetual siege geopolitical, economic, and cultural.

The Nile is not just a river. It is Ethiopia’s birthright and the foundation of Africa’s future. Egypt knows this. That is why it cultivates and employs agents from within our own soil to erode our resolve. Ethiopia must now act decisively: to strategically and permanently dismiss these bandit Askaris and extremist militias from the national landscape. Only through this can we reclaim our rightful place as the sovereign guardian of the Nile, free from the colonial ghosts and their modern servants.

History teaches us that disunity is our greatest enemy. Colonialism thrived by planting mercenaries among us. The future will only belong to us if we unite, cast away these betrayers, and defend Ethiopia’s national interest with vigilance and courage.

Ethiopia will win these wars whether they are fought in propaganda, in diplomacy, or in battle. The GERD will rise. The nation will prosper. And the conspiracies of TPLF, PFDJ, Fano, and their Egyptian masters will collapse into the dustbin of history.

The Nile’s flow is eternal,so too must be Ethiopia’s sovereignty.
