AU Chairperson Condemns Deadly Drone Strike on El Fasher Mosque, Urges Ceasefire in Sudan

Addis Ababa, 20 September 2025

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has strongly condemned a deadly drone strike that targeted civilians during dawn prayers at a mosque in El Fasher, North Darfur, on 19 September. According to AU statements, the attack claimed the lives of more than 75 worshippers.

Describing the incident as a “heinous” act and a violation of international humanitarian law, Youssouf extended condolences to the families of the victims and to the people of Sudan. He called the strike a “flagrant violation of fundamental human values and principles.”

The AU chief reiterated his appeal for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” in Sudan, referencing the Jeddah Agreement of May 2023 as a framework for ending hostilities. He stressed that an inclusive political dialogue remains the only path to achieving a just and lasting peace in the conflict-ravaged country.

The African Union Commission reaffirmed its commitment to support Sudanese stakeholders and international partners in efforts to restore peace, national cohesion, and stability.

The El Fasher strike is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have escalated Sudan’s humanitarian crisis, with civilians continuing to bear the brunt of a prolonged conflict between rival military factions.
