Amigos SACCO Supports Aksum Clean-Up Campaign With 6.5 Million Birr as Cooperative Marks Major Growth
Aksum, Tigray — Amigos Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO) has provided more than 6.5 million birr to support public clean-up groups across Aksum, reinforcing its expanding role in community development as the institution marks significant growth since its founding 12 years ago.

Amigos SACCO began in 2005 E.C. when 20 friends established the cooperative with an initial capital of just 9,000 birr. The organization has since evolved into one of the region’s notable community-focused financial institutions, now serving more than 7,500 members, employing over 110 staff, and holding total assets exceeding 2.5 billion birr. The cooperative is widely recognized for its member-centered culture, treating its clients and employees “as family,” according to its leadership.
City officials said the latest contribution targets 21 community clean-up groups working to maintain sanitation and improve public health in the historic city of Aksum. Funds are directed toward upgrading facilities, equipment, and operational capacities of the volunteer teams.

Representatives of the clean-up groups described the support as timely and impactful, noting that strengthened facilities will help sustain ongoing efforts to keep the city cleaner and safer.
Aksum Mayor Ayte Tekue Hailu praised the cooperative’s long-standing engagement in social responsibility initiatives, describing the contribution as a meaningful addition to local environmental and public health programs. Officials from the Culture and Tourism Office also highlighted the scale of the assistance, saying the cooperative’s transparency and consistency in community support set a notable example for other institutions.

Amigos SACCO’s leadership stated that its engagement in Aksum forms part of a broader commitment to social responsibility across Tigray, aligning with the organization’s long-term goals. The cooperative’s vision is to become a world-class provider of financial and non-financial services by 2030, supported by a mission focused on improving members’ living standards through modern technology, skilled staff, and socially responsible operations.
Local administrators say such partnerships remain essential as Aksum continues efforts to restore public services and strengthen community-based initiatives following years of disruption.
