African Union Welcomes UN Resolution Recognizing Transatlantic Slave Trade as Crime Against Humanity

The African Union Commission Chairperson has welcomed the adoption of a new resolution by the United Nations General Assembly recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.

The resolution, identified as A/80/L.48 and led by the Ghana, formally acknowledges the historical injustice and long term consequences of the transatlantic slave trade. The African Union Commission described the decision as an important milestone in advancing historical recognition and justice.

According to the statement, the Chairperson commended the President of Ghana for what was described as significant leadership, noting that the move reflects Africa’s longstanding call for full recognition of the slave trade and its enduring impact on African societies and the global African diaspora.

The Chairperson said the resolution represents a meaningful step toward truth, justice, and healing. The statement also stressed the need to address the continuing social, economic, and political consequences linked to slavery.

The African Union reiterated its position that comprehensive acknowledgment of both historical and contemporary impacts of slavery remains essential. The organization also renewed its call for reparative justice, referencing commitments outlined in Agenda 2063 and previous Assembly decisions.

The African Union further stated that it will continue working with the United Nations, member states, and international partners to advance historical justice and ensure that such crimes are neither forgotten nor repeated.

The resolution comes amid growing global discussions on historical accountability, reparations, and recognition of the lasting legacy of slavery across Africa, the Americas, and Europe.
