Afar–Tigray Peace Conference Brings Local Leaders Together
A joint peace and unity conference bringing together representatives from the Afar and Tigray communities, along with members of the Tigray Peace Forces (TPF), has been convened with the aim of strengthening relations and supporting efforts toward long-term stability in the region.

Participants described the gathering as a community-driven initiative designed to rebuild trust, address tensions, and encourage dialogue following years of political and security crises. Organizers said the conference seeks to create a platform for people-to-people engagement and to explore pathways for sustainable peace.
Senior figures in attendance included Generals Berha Barakhi and Tesfay Neguse recognized within the Tigray Peace Forces. Commanders from the TPF, administrators from South and Southeast Tigray zones, officials from the Afar Regional State, the mayor of Megale town, local authorities, and religious leaders also participated.
Speaking at the conference, TPF spokesperson and Central Command member Tesfay Nigus said, “The people of Tigray and Afar historically share the same destiny. Their historic relationships will not be spoiled by the war-mongering TPLF.” He emphasized the longstanding social and cultural ties between the two communities.

The Tigray Peace Forces have established their operational base in Afar, a move officials describe as part of their commitment to fostering regional cooperation and maintaining security.
Speakers at the event highlighted the importance of cooperation between neighboring communities and underscored the need for continued communication to prevent future conflict. The conference concluded with calls for more inclusive forums and locally anchored peace mechanisms to ensure that any agreements reflect the needs and concerns of both populations.
