Addis Ababa Prepares 10-Year Urban Forest Strategy to Expand Green Coverage
Addis Ababa is advancing plans to expand its urban forest coverage through a new ten-year strategy aimed at guiding the city’s green development and environmental sustainability.

The Addis Ababa Urban Beautification and Green Development Bureau announced that the proposed urban forest development strategy is currently under discussion, with officials emphasizing equitable access to green spaces across all communities.
According to Bureau Head Girma Seifu, the city’s green development initiatives are being implemented with a focus on social equity, ensuring residents benefit regardless of economic status. He noted that the expansion of urban forests is intended not only to improve environmental conditions but also to enhance quality of life across neighborhoods.
The proposed “Addis Ababa City Forest Strategy” will cover the period from 2026/27 to 2036/37 and is expected to provide a structured framework for managing, protecting, and expanding green spaces throughout the capital.
Officials said the strategy has undergone multiple revisions and stakeholder consultations, with the current discussions representing the final phase before implementation. Once adopted, the plan is expected to guide sustainable urban development, improve climate resilience, and strengthen environmental management across the city.

Urban forest expansion has become a central component of Addis Ababa’s broader development agenda, as authorities seek to address rapid urbanization, reduce pollution, and create more livable public spaces.
