Addis Ababa Police Intensify Crackdown on Illegal Substances
Addis Ababa’s city administration has reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and the rule of law through an intensified crackdown on illegal substances. The Addis Ababa Police Commission confirmed the destruction of more than 1,500 hookah smoking materials, alongside significant quantities of illegal drugs and khat seized during recent operations across the capital.

According to Arada Sub city police officials, 25 suspects have been arrested in connection with the illegal possession, distribution, and use of these substances. Investigations remain ongoing, with authorities indicating that further arrests and legal action may follow as networks involved in the trade are dismantled.
The move underscores the city administration’s broader strategy to combat illicit activities that threaten public health, social stability, and youth wellbeing. Officials say the sustained enforcement reflects a zero-tolerance approach toward illegal substances and signals the administration’s determination to create a safer and more orderly urban environment.
Police have also called on residents to cooperate by reporting illegal activities, stressing that community engagement is critical to ensuring lasting results in the fight against drug-related crimes.
