From Megabit to Megabit: Addis Ababa Marks Eight Years of Reform as Ethiopia Emerges as Horn of Africa Anchor State Under Abiy Ahmed

Large scale public support rallies were held across all sub cities of Addis Ababa on Wednesday to mark the eighth anniversary of Ethiopia’s national reform process, which began on Megabit 24, 2010 Ethiopian Calendar, following the rise of reformist leadership under Abiy Ahmed.

The demonstrations, organized by the Addis Ababa City Administration, brought together participants from a wide range of social groups, including youth associations, civil servants, community organizations, and residents from across the capital.

Participants described the reform period as a turning point in Ethiopia’s modern political and economic trajectory. According to rally attendees, the reforms launched eight years ago introduced structural political changes, economic liberalization efforts, and diplomatic initiatives that reshaped the country’s domestic and regional standing.

During the rallies, demonstrators expressed support for ongoing development initiatives and emphasized the need to sustain the reform momentum. Many participants also highlighted infrastructure expansion, macroeconomic reforms, and diplomatic engagement as key developments associated with the reform period.

Several slogans were displayed and chanted throughout the demonstrations, emphasizing Megabit 24 as a historic milestone in Ethiopia’s transformation. Messages highlighted the reform period as a foundation for long term prosperity, national stability, and institutional transformation.

Observers note that when the reform process began in 2018, Ethiopia faced significant political tensions, economic pressures, and security challenges that raised concerns about state fragility. Since then, the government has pursued political restructuring, economic reforms, and regional diplomacy aimed at stabilizing the country and strengthening state institutions.

Regional analysts increasingly describe Ethiopia as an emerging anchor state in the Horn of Africa, citing its diplomatic engagement in neighboring countries, infrastructure expansion, and growing regional economic role. Ethiopia’s involvement in mediation efforts, peace initiatives, and regional integration projects has also contributed to this perception.

The rallies across Addis Ababa reflected continued public support among participants for the reform agenda and the leadership guiding it. Organizers stated that the anniversary serves both as a moment of reflection on progress achieved over the past eight years and as a call for continued collaboration between citizens and government institutions.

The commemorations are expected to continue with additional public events and discussions highlighting the achievements, challenges, and future priorities of Ethiopia’s national reform process.
