Eve: “The Melody of Myriads” Fills Meskel Square on Ethiopian Christmas Eve

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Thousands of worshippers gathered at Meskel Square on Monday evening as the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church marked the eve of Ethiopian Christmas, known locally as Gena, with its annual spiritual celebration titled “The Melody of Myriads.”

The event brought together clergy, church choirs, youth groups, and congregants from across Addis Ababa and surrounding areas. Participants engaged in traditional hymns, rhythmic chants, and coordinated spiritual performances that reflect centuries old Orthodox Christian liturgy.

Worshippers dressed in traditional white garments, carrying prayer sticks and religious symbols, filled the square as choirs performed devotional songs accompanied by kebero drums and sistra. Candles illuminated the gathering, creating a solemn and reflective atmosphere as prayers were offered ahead of the Christmas Day observance.

Church officials described the annual gathering as a moment of collective worship and spiritual renewal, emphasizing its role in strengthening faith and community bonds. The celebration is held every year on the eve of Gena, which the Ethiopian Orthodox Church observes on January 7, following the Julian calendar.

Security and municipal authorities were present to manage the large crowd, while the event proceeded peacefully. Similar Christmas Eve observances also took place at major Orthodox churches across the country.

“The Melody of Myriads” has become one of the most visible public religious events in the capital, drawing both worshippers and observers and highlighting the enduring cultural and spiritual traditions of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity.

The gathering also offered a striking visual of Addis Ababa itself. As prayers and hymns filled Meskel Square, the city’s illuminated skyline formed a backdrop to the celebration, reflecting an African capital that continues to blend deep rooted spiritual traditions with a rapidly evolving urban identity.
