EAII and SIMAD AI Institute Sign MoU to Strengthen AI Cooperation

The Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute (EAII) and the SIMAD AI Institute, established under SIMAD University in Somalia, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence.

The agreement was signed during a virtual ceremony and marks the formal start of institutional collaboration between the two AI bodies.

According to the institutions, the MoU provides a framework for joint research, technology development, and capacity building initiatives in priority areas of artificial intelligence identified as being of mutual interest. The partnership aims to strengthen technical expertise and promote knowledge exchange across borders.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, EAII Director General Worku Gachena (PhD) said the institute is committed to close cooperation with the SIMAD AI Institute and to sharing experience and institutional capacity between Ethiopia and Somalia. He described the agreement as a foundation for long term collaboration and expressed confidence that it would lead to meaningful research outcomes and mutual learning.

SIMAD AI Institute Director Yahye Abukar (PhD) said the partnership would allow both institutions to draw on shared regional and cultural strengths to develop context relevant AI solutions. He noted that pooling intellectual resources and talent could help position the Horn of Africa as an emerging contributor to global AI innovation.

Both sides indicated that further implementation plans and joint activities will be developed following the agreement, with a focus on building sustainable AI ecosystems in the region.
