Addis Ababa Mayor Transfers 106 Kebele Houses to Vulnerable Residents

Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie on December 13 handed over 106 kebele houses to residents living under severe socio-economic hardship in Lideta Sub-City, according to an official statement.

The beneficiaries include elderly citizens, persons with disabilities, low-income households, and residents who had been living in disaster-prone areas, particularly along riverbanks. City officials said the initiative is part of broader efforts to improve housing security for vulnerable urban communities.

In a message shared on her official social media platforms, Mayor Adanech said the newly constructed houses are intended not only to provide safe shelter but also to strengthen social cohesion and community solidarity.

She also addressed the resolution of a long-standing housing challenge affecting residents displaced from the banks of the Qurtumi River in Arada Sub-City. According to the mayor, these residents had endured prolonged hardship due to disputes involving third parties, which delayed permanent resettlement.

City authorities said the handover marks the completion of that process, with affected households now receiving permanent housing. The administration described the move as part of ongoing urban renewal and social protection programs aimed at addressing housing vulnerability in Addis Ababa.
