Egypt Raises GERD Concerns at UN Security Council
Egypt has formally addressed the United Nations Security Council over Ethiopia’s announcement of the completion and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), calling it a violation of international law.
In a letter delivered by Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel Aati, Cairo reiterated its rejection of what it described as unilateral Ethiopian actions on the Nile. The letter stressed that the dam cannot gain legitimacy through ceremonies or political framing, insisting that it undermines the legal framework governing the Eastern Nile Basin.

Egypt accused Ethiopia of deliberately stalling negotiations and using the dam to pursue political agendas, while ignoring the concerns of downstream nations Egypt and Sudan. The government said it has exercised restraint and pursued diplomacy, but warned it would not compromise on its “existential interests” in the Nile River.
Egypt affirmed it reserves the right to take “all measures guaranteed by international law and the UN Charter” to protect its water security.
As of now, there has been no response from the Ethiopian government regarding Egypt’s statement.
